This edition presents 36 letters that Peter Collinson, a merchant and botanist in London, wrote to Haller in the period 1748–1767. Others are known to have been disappeared, as have all of Haller’s. The central topic of the letters is botany, including the exchange of seeds. The curious and well-connected Collinson also reported on and inquired about a range of subjects related to other parts of natural history. Christlob Mylius’s ill-fated plan, supported by Haller, to sail from London and explore parts of North America, forms a recurring theme in the years 1752–1754.
