The Manuscripts

Six letters by Vandenhoeck to Haller have survived, the manuscripts of which are now located in the Burgerbibliothek Bern. A letter from her dated 22 February 1748 is listed in Gottlieb Emanuel von Haller’s inventory of his father’s correspondence but has disappeared. On Haller’s side we have twenty-six letters, the originals of which are now in the possession of fifteen different institutions.

With one exception, all of Haller’s letters are in his handwriting. By contrast, none of the letters from Vandenhoeck are in her handwriting, but four of them do bear her signature.
